Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie. It’s officially October a.k.a. Spooky Season, meaning it’s time to dive headfirst into the supernatural. While there is certainly no shortage of vampire and ghost movies, we’re breaking down arguably the best of the supernatural genre- zombie movies and shows, specifically Netflix’s undead offerings. From zom-drams to zom-coms and Netflix originals to zombie hits of the past, Netflix is the go-to streamer of the undead. Like the iconic Cranberries hit, these zombie movies will be stuck in your head, in your head after this Netflix zombie movie marathon. Check out the best new zombie movies on Netflix in October 2022!

1) Resident Evil

When a deadly viral outbreak leaks out at a mysterious bio-engineering company and kills all of the employees inside, the facility seals itself off in hopes of containing the leak. A military task force led by Alice (Milla Jovovich) and Rain is tasked with preventing the virus from overrunning the Earth. The team soon discovers the dead employees are in fact… undead. With a race against the clock and the fate of the Earth on the line, Alice and Rain do everything they can to fight off hundreds of scientists turned evil zombies and to contain the virus that killed them. Resident Evil, the 2002 zombie movie based on Capcom’s mega-hit game series of the same name, is now streaming on Netflix.

Loved Resident Evil? You’re in luck. The zombie movie sequels, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Resident Evil: Retribution are also streaming on Netflix. Plus, all episodes of Resident Evil, the Netflix original series based on the movie franchise, are now streaming.

Without warning, the citizens of Seoul start turning into violent zombies. Joon-woo (Burning’s Yoo Ah-in) is a tech-savvy gamer living at his parent's apartment in Seoul, which becomes a hotspot for zombies. Joon-woo is determined to survive– self-isolating indoors, rationing food, and breaking into dad’s booze cabinet (it’s giving 2020). The debilitating loneliness and dwindling supplies take their toll until he notices a cute tenant across the hallway from him has also survived. #Alive, Netflix’s Korean zombie movie, is now streaming.

3) Army of the Dead

Zack Snyder, the director of the four-hour hit Zack Snyder’s Justice League, takes on the zombie movie genre in Netflix’s Army of the Dead. A U.S. military vehicle transporting a mysterious shipment from Area 51 crashes on the freeway, unleashing a zombie. After it kills and turns the soldiers involved in the crash, the newly formed zombie crew heads to Sin City, where they infect unsuspecting partiers. When the government quarantines the city and plans a nuclear strike to eliminate the growing zombie population of Vegas, a desperate casino owner hires Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) to recover $200 million from his casino vault before the city is wiped out. Ward and his team of talented misfits take on a city full of zombies to complete the seemingly impossible heist.

4) Kingdom: Ashin of the North (2021)

Kingdom: Ashin of the North is the 2021 prequel movie to Netflix’s hit Korean zombie series Kingdom is a must-watch whether you’re new to or very familiar with the Kingdom universe. The Netflix original zombie movie begins 10 years before the events of the series during the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. War has broken out due to rising tensions with Japan resulting in the loss of Ashin’s family and tribe. Ashin (Jun Ji-hyun) becomes set on revenge which leads to deadly zombie consequences.

5) Cargo (2017)

Andy (The Hobbit’s Martin Freeman) is living safely on a houseboat in rural Australia with his wife Kay and their one-year-old daughter, Rosie, as the world becomes overrun by a deadly virus that turns people into zombies within 48 hours of infection. When Kay becomes infected by the virus on a supply run, the family leaves the safety of their boat in search of help. Sadly, it’s too late - Kay becomes a zombie and infects Andy immediately after turning. With only 48 hours until Andy’s fate as a zombie is sealed, he does everything he can to find a new home for their soon-to-be orphaned daughter Rosie.

Cargo, Netflix’s original zombie movie is not your average gory zombie movie, instead, it leans towards the emotional turmoil of a father struggling to protect his daughter while grappling with his mortality. But don’t worry: there are still plenty of tense, edge-of-your-seat zombie moments.

6) Ravenous (2017)

The apocalypse hits a small, remote village in Quebec in Netflix’s French zombie movie, Ravenous. The bodies of the village’s locals begin to break down as they slowly turn into ravenous zombies. The survivors take to the woods to avoid the fate of their neighbors where they meet and join forces with other survivors in the area. Together, they journey to the big city in hopes of protection and solace from the shrieking zombies back home.

7) Kingdom (2019)

Kingdom, the companion pick to Netflix’s new zombie movie, Kingdom: Ashin of the North, is a must-watch– it even has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes!

Kingdom is set during the Korean medieval Joseon Dynasty where the King named his bastard son Chang prince and heir to the throne. Years later, the King marries a young Queen and has a child with her, producing a new heir. When the King mysteriously falls ill and rumors that he has died spread across the country, a succession war that rivals House of the Dragon breaks out—along with a mysterious illness that turns people into zombies. Amidst an attempted coup for control of the throne, Chang goes on a journey for answers in hopes of saving his people.

The first two seasons of Kingdom are now streaming on Netflix.

All of Us Are Dead, Netflix’s new Korean zombie thriller became a hit shortly after the mega success of Squid Game at the end of 2021. In All of Us Are Dead, a Korean high school becomes ground zero for a zombie virus outbreak after an infected student emerges from the science lab. As the infection spreads throughout the halls, students must fight off zombies who were once their peers or risk becoming one of them.

9) The Walking Dead (2010)

No zombie list is complete without the two-time Emmy Award-winning series, The Walking Dead. Luckily, the first 10 seasons are now streaming on Netflix. It’s the perfect time to jump in for a binge-watch before the eleventh and final season comes to an end on AMC later this year.

Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) wakes up from a coma after being shot to find the world he once knew is gone. His new post-apocalyptic world is dominated by flesh-eating zombies at every turn. Grimes heads out on a lone ranger journey, desperate to find his family. Along the way, Grimes encounters a host of both loveable and terrifying characters that band together for survival.

10) Santa Clarita Diet (2017)

Looking for a lighter, humorous spin on the world of zombies? Netflix’s zombie comedy, Santa Clarita Diet, starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant is a perfect choice. Netflix canceled the series after 3 seasons but fans are hopeful that another streamer will pick it up after the show’s creator shared his dreams of a fourth season.

Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and Joel (Timothy Olyphant) are a normal married couple slash real estate duo living a quiet life in Santa Clarita, California—until Sheila undergoes a dramatic transformation into a zombie that still has her wits about her despite the urge to ravage human flesh. The couple adjusts to their new zombie normal while balancing Sheila’s truly killer new diet.
