| | You Otto Be in Pictures | A Man Called Otto is a remake, based on a 2016 Swedish film called A Man Called Ové that was itself based on a bestselling book. But aside from hardcore Swede-ophiles (a select group, surely) the draw here is Tom Hanks playing against type as a neighborhood curmudgeon whose insistence on everyone obeying the rules hides a deep sadness. How does Hanks’ casting pan out? Critics are mixed. | - “[It] … wears its heart on its sleeve and can be a little soft and gooey at times. But it wins us over in the end, thanks in large part to Hanks delivering the umpteenth memorable performance in his remarkable career.” — Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times
- “We know there are dark roads that Hanks just isn’t going to go down, and some of the early, more caustic scenes of Forster’s film strike a false note. But … Hanks movingly tailors the role to himself.” — Jake Coyle, Associated Press
- “If something in you rears up at the directive to ‘Fall in love with the grumpiest man in America,’ then you’ll know to steer wide of this English-language adaptation… That tagline is an accurate summation of the film’s squish-together of cantankerous and cuddlesome …[that’s] turned themes of great love, loss, and the will to keep going into … easy listening.” — Kimberley Jones, Austin Chronicle

| The List |
| | It’s The End of the World As We Know It | Will The Last of Us be the first great TV show to be based on a video game? Everything about HBO’s latest big-budget drama—from its cast to its behind-the-scenes credits—suggests that it could be. Satisfy your curiosity when the sci-fi drama series premieres this Sunday, Jan. 15, on HBO Max. While you’re waiting, discover (or revisit) these great post-apocalyptic series. | | Station Eleven | This HBO drama premiered at the end of 2021, and the timing made its vision of a post-apocalyptic Midwest where most of the population has been wiped out by a mysterious virus called the “Georgia Flu” all the more eerie. Like the novel it was based on, Station Eleven takes a naturalistic approach to the end of the world, drawing praise from critics for its writing and performances. | Add to watchlist |
|
| | Sweet Tooth | Set in a world in which a virus has led to the creation of half-human, half-animal hybrids, the show revolves around Gus (Christian Convery), a half-deer/human hybrid searching for his birth mother alongside Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), a tough, gruff wanderer who becomes his protector. | Add to watchlist |
|
| | The Last Man on Earth | Rather than sci-fi horror, this cult sitcom takes a comedic view of life after the death of (almost) every human being on the planet. Will Forte stars, with Kristen Schaal, Jason Sudeikis, and others joining in later seasons. | Add to watchlist |
