Why Ali Hazelwood Loves Enemies-to-Lovers |
The Book Mara, Sadie, and Hannah’s friendship grew out of their shared love of science and the challenges they faced as women in STEM programs. In Loathe to Love You, they start their careers while navigating complicated relationships with infuriating, impossible, irresistible men.
The Author Ali Hazelwood’s debut The Love Hypothesis was a viral hit, propelling her to the top of bestseller lists and inspiring thousands of impassioned TikToks about internet boyfriend Adam Carlsen. We chatted with her about her newest release, a collection of three swoony novellas.
Loathe to Love You is a collection of novellas - how is writing a shorter story different from a full-length novel?
Ali Hazelwood: The main difference is that you have less space to take your characters from “not together” to “together,” which usually requires getting a bit creative with the passage of time and story beats. That’s part of why I decided to write each novella in dual timelines—I thought it might help get a feeling of where the characters started and how far they went in their relationship.
All three of the stories have an enemies-to-lovers element. What do you love about that trope?
AH: The TL;DR answer is: everything! But what I love the most is how falling in love with an enemy means that at the very start of the relationship you’ve already seen how truly terrible that person can be. It can provide a very solid start for a relationship, because you already know how bad things could get.
Your heroines are engineers with different specialties. How do you choose their careers?
AH: It depends, but I usually have a feeling that a specific interest will fit the personality of a given character. For instance, Mara is very passionate and stubborn, and I thought that making her an environmental engineer would fit those traits well. On the other hand, Hannah is someone who’s a bit “on the run,” mostly from herself, and she seemed to me like the kind of character who would be intrigued by space exploration.
Here are other romances that Ali Hazelwood loves: |
| The Stand-Up Groomsman | AH: "Aside from the romance, I loved how unique and authentic the female and the male main characters were as individuals, and reading about them coming together was an utter pleasure!" | |
|
|
| Before I Let Go | AH: “The most intensely emotional and satisfying second chance romance I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.“ | |
|
|
| Well Traveled | AH: “A delicious opposites attract, forced proximity romance set in the world of Renaissance Faires. I loved this fresh take on two of my favorite tropes!” | |

“It wasn’t the screams he remembered most, although they crashed to shore inside the howling, furious wind and ricocheted for hours around the high cliffs above the beach. It wasn’t the storm or the roaring, foaming waves that carved great snaking wounds through the wet sand and stole its shape from under his feet.” |
